Synopsis* (may contain spoilers)
The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie is a gripping and entertaining novel set in a world of magic and intrigue. The story focuses on the adventures of four main characters, each with their unique backstory, motivations, and secrets. The plot is centered around a great political and magical crisis that threatens to engulf the land.

The story unfolds in the city of Valbeck, a bustling metropolis at the heart of the kingdom of Starikland. The city is home to a diverse array of people, including wealthy merchants, powerful nobles, skilled craftsmen, and a large population of poor people struggling to survive. The novel begins with the introduction of the four main characters.

The first is Savine dan Glokta, daughter of the infamous Inquisitor Glokta. Savine is a young woman of great wealth and beauty, who uses her intelligence and wit to manipulate the people around her. She has a keen mind for business, and is a shrewd investor who is always looking for the next big opportunity. Savine is also secretly in love with an old friend, Leo dan Brock, who is the heir to the throne of Starikland.

The second character is Rikke, a young girl with the gift of prophecy. Rikke is the daughter of the chief of the Dogman's tribe, a group of warriors who have sworn allegiance to the king of Starikland. Rikke's gift is both a blessing and a curse, as it allows her to see the future but also makes her a target for those who seek to control her power.

The third character is Orso, the weak and ineffectual son of the current king of Starikland. Orso is a lazy and self-absorbed young man who is more interested in drinking and carousing than in ruling his kingdom. He is constantly under pressure from his advisors, who are all vying for power and influence.

The final character is Leo dan Brock, the handsome and charismatic heir to the throne of Starikland. Leo is a skilled warrior and a natural leader, but he is also haunted by his past and rarely shows his true feelings to others. Leo is fiercely loyal to his people, but he is also deeply conflicted about his role as a future king.

The novel's central conflict begins when a group of powerful and mysterious figures known as the Breakers arrive in Valbeck. The Breakers are a secret society of magic-users who seek to overthrow the established order and replace it with their own vision of the world. They are led by a charismatic and enigmatic woman known as the Weaver, who possesses the power to control and manipulate the minds of others.

The Breakers quickly gain a foothold in Valbeck, using their magic to sow discord and chaos throughout the city. They begin to recruit followers from among the city's disaffected and disillusioned citizens, promising a better future for all if they join their cause. The city becomes divided between those who support the Breakers and those who oppose them, with both sides resorting to violence and intimidation to achieve their goals.

As the situation in Valbeck deteriorates, the four main characters find themselves drawn into the conflict. Savine becomes embroiled in a complex financial scheme involving the Breakers, using her business acumen to try and outmaneuver them. Rikke is kidnapped by the Breakers and forced to use her gift to help them in their quest for power. Orso is sent on a mission to negotiate with the Breakers, but finds himself out of his depth when he comes face-to-face with the Weaver. And Leo must confront his own demons as he sets out to stop the Breakers once and for all.

The Wisdom of Crowds is a fast-paced and action-packed novel that will keep readers guessing until the very end. Abercrombie's world-building is impressive, with a richly detailed setting that feels both familiar and exotic. The characters are engaging and multi-dimensional, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The plot is full of twists and turns, with plenty of intrigue and excitement to keep readers interested. Overall, The Wisdom of Crowds is a must-read for fans of fantasy and adventure.

From amazon.com:

The New York Times bestselling finale to the Age of Madness trilogyfinds the world in an unstoppable revolution where heroes have nothing left to lose as darkness and destruction overtake everything.

Chaos. Fury. Destruction.

The Great Change is upon us . . .

Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: the Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds.

With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption. Orso will find that when the world is turned upside down, no one is lower than a monarch. And in the bloody North, Rikke and her fragile Protectorate are running out of allies . . . while Black Calder gathers his forces and plots his vengeance.

The banks have fallen, the sun of the Union has been torn down, and in the darkness behind the scenes, the threads of the Weaver's ruthless plan are slowly being drawn together . . .

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
